In Part I of this two-part series, I covered the biblical basis for Children’s deliverance.
In this article, I want to offer some insight that will help you discern if what you are dealing with is a demon manifesting in your child or a discipline problem.
Sadly, many parents are looking for a quick fix for years of poor parenting. Parents will tell me that they are too tired when they get home from work to enforce clear boundaries with their children. They pacify them by giving into their demands because it’s easier than the ensuing struggle. What they wind up with are children that have learned how to run the household by wearing down parental resolve!
I remember an instance with a frazzled parent who brought their child in for deliverance. Within 30 minutes of their arrival, my office looked like a war zone. I purposed not to intervene during this session so I could see how she was managing her little handful.
What I observed was her lack of control and discipline of a strong-willed child. She cried, “Everyone can control him, but me!” This child did not need deliverance, he needed discipline and structure!
It makes no sense to take a child through deliverance if the parents cannot keep the doors to the torment shut. The spirits that are cast out will come right back using the parents weakness to return to the house (Matt 12:43).
Before we consider taking a child through deliverance, we require that the parent(s) go through first. Clear understanding of how to war on behalf of the children after deliverance is essential to success. You don’t get this clarity without going through it first for yourself.
On the other hand, I have seen plenty of parents who have gone through deliverance and who are good disciplinarians be defeated by a demon.
One couple brought in their son who was dealing with a spirit of murder and violence. They were firm disciplinarians, but the torment was escalating. Their 4-year old boy was threatening to kill his 2-year old brother and his grandfather with a knife.
He would switch from a little prayer warrior one minute to a violent bully the next. We were able to discern the root of this torment through our sessions and he was gloriously set free. They still had to enforce firm discipline after deliverance, but this time it worked!
Demons cannot be disciplined!
How Can You Tell If It’s a Demon or Your Child Will?
If you notice a behavior such as anger overpowering your child, immediately speak your child’s name out loud and then try binding that spirit by declaring out loud. For example, if your child’s name is Mary,
“Mary, I bind that spirit of (anger, fear, impatience, rebellion, etc.) tormenting Mary in the name and blood of Jesus Christ. I now loose peace, love and joy over Mary in Jesus Christ’s name.”
By first calling out your child’s name, you are dismissing the spirit, and putting your child’s name above whatever is manifesting. If you see your child snap out of the torment and look at you perplexed as if they didn’t know what was happening, there is probably a demon involved.
Binding and loosing are biblical keys to the kingdom Christ gave us in Matt 16:19. This is only a temporary fix, however, and the length of time they remain bound depends on the will of the child and how quickly they come back into agreement with the demon.
If this step works for you, and you have firm discipline in place, then deliverance counseling is your next step. Trained counselors can help you understand the door this demon used to enter your child in order to cast it out permanently.
