A person’s spiritual temperament and associated thinking patterns are an important element of waging effective spiritual warfare. As Christians better understand themselves and how the demonic kingdom works on minds they can win more spiritual battles.
The NCCA Arno Profile System is a clinical diagnostic tool to help identify a person’s God-given temperament. This model uses five different temperament types (Melancholy, Supine, Choleric, Sanguine and Phlegmatic) and there are associated strengths and weaknesses with each type.
We are going to explore, during the next five parts of the series, some of the attributes of each temperament type that are important in waging one important aspect of spiritual warfare: the battle of the mind.
There are many aspects of spiritual warfare, including deliverance ministry, proper discerning of spirits, binding/loosing and more. However, one of the key areas for believers is recognizing the significant battle that goes on between our ears. God is able to put thoughts into our mind, the mind has its own thoughts generated by stimulus from our senses and we need to know that demons can put thoughts in our mind too.
The demonic realm, which is working their plan for us to kill, steal and destroy (John 10:10) has access to our soul realm (mind, memory and emotions) and is heavily motivated to stir up memories of past wrongs, sins and more to get us off the narrow road to life (Matt. 7:14). If we understand well our individual temperaments and how our mind works, it can help us be alert so we can quickly take thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Cor.10:5).
To pique your interest for the other parts to come, consider the following snippets for each of the five temperaments:
- Melancholies – perceive rejection easily (real or imagined) so are often bombarded with thoughts of worthlessness. Melancholies also think a lot… about a lot of things.. so the mind is a fertile ground for bad (and good) to transpire.
- Supines– have a lot of indirect behaviors and are not vocal about what their needs. They tend to stay in the background and, like the background, pick up on rejection easily.
- Sanguines– very social creatures who do not do well if isolated. If they are rejected, they tend to sulk and go into a down spiral of moodiness.
- Cholerics-very concerned about being controlled or manipulated and are repulsed by the weakness of others.
- Phlegmatics-characterized as peacemakers and low energy types so do not respond well if they perceive they are being pushed into situations or into making a decision.
Can you see how a person’s temperament might affect the nature of thoughts that they might be dealing with us. The demonic kingdom has great understanding of each person’s temperament and can tailor specific strategies of torment accordingly.
Learning how to wage war effectively in this area is a huge component for Christians to walk in victory. We’ll look at each temperament type in detail in the remaining five parts of this series.
