Our Counseling Center routinely receive emails from people who have found our website. They related their story and conclude with the phrase, “I know I need deliverance.”
It is a common and sad reality that they are unable to find help in their local area and many have been ignored or misdirected by their local church.
Below is an actual email we recently received, slightly edited to preserve anonymity and fix some grammatical errors. I’ve included my response to this person below their email.
Subject: question about deliverance
hello I am 23 years of age, and I’ve been battling years of depression, oppression, anxiety, fear, suicidal thoughts and people have told me that god was going to deliver me from this but my question is, I’m not sure what to think, is it gods timing or do i need to do something to get set free? Can someone be delivered by not going through deliverance ministry, how do i know if just gods will that i suffer in this until he is ready or me having to find someone who can deliver me?
My reply:
“Dear xxx,
Thank you for your email. Let me try to answer your questions and also give you hope. It sounds like you have been getting well-meaning advice from people in church who sympathize with your issues but do not know how to help you. Based on what you have said, you do need deliverance. God delivers people sovereignly but also commanded his church to “drive out demons” (Mark 16:17). God’s timing for you is now, not later. He did not put this torment upon you and Jesus destroyed these works of the devil on the cross. He has given his church power and authority to help you but too few walk in this. Counseling is wonderful and helpful (we are licensed counselors also), but you cannot counsel demons out of you.
Also, it is not God’s will that you suffer like this and there is nothing you need to do to get ready! He loves you, Christ died for you and He wants you free! Period! You do indeed need to find someone who operates in the knowledge, power and authority of the Holy Spirit to help deliver you and set you free from this torment.”
What are your thoughts about this response? Was there something wrong or missing that you would have added?
I did have some additional concluding remarks about possibly connecting with us to see if there is an interest in our internet deliverance ministry program. Our main concern is that people get help and we truly wish that we could refer these people to help locally.Occasionally we can; local, face to face, competent counseling and deliverance is always preferable and our goal is to help train people in this area so that more of the body of Christ is equipped in deliverance ministry.
