Parallel Bible passages in Mark and Matthew relate the story about Jesus interacting with the father of a demonized boy. The father had brought the boy to Christ’s disciples but they could not drive the demon out. Jesus immediately called the spirit out of the boy and declared to his father that “this kind only comes out by prayer and fasting.” (Matthew 17:21) The account in Mark (Mark 9:29) says, “This kind can come out only by prayer.” (NIV).
