Almost Overpowered: When Demons Behave Badly

By Don Ibbitson

demons behave

Christians should not be afraid of demons. We are called to discern, resist and also drive them out during deliverance ministry. Although we take safeguards, occasionally one will manifest in physical strength against us and it can be disconcerting. This is one such account during one of my sessions many years ago.

We are not quick to lay hands on people and quickly jump into calling out demons. People need counseling, inner healing and more but when it comes time to get people set free from strongholds, deliverance is the only answer. It’s what Jesus did, it’s what the disciples did and it is what the church of today is called to do also (Mark 16:17).

We prepare people for deliverance using a five step process and the fourth session is the actual ministry time. Because of the preparation, it usually flows smoothly with little manifestations of spirits when they leave. We do not believe in talking to demons or allowing them to show off or torment during the session and we deal with those occasions as they arise.

We Expect Demons to Leave Quietly

Our process does involve sitting in front of the person, looking into their eyes (the windows of the soul (Matt xx)), holding their hand (biblical model for flow of the Holy Spirit) and calling out the spirits firmly and clearly.

During one session, I was ministering to a tall, strong man who had done his homework, prepared well and desperately wanted to be free from the demonic torment that he knew he was under. It started off well, with some typical manifestations (yawning, eye twitching and the like) for the most part until we got to the spirits under the strongman of jealousy.

That’s when the “fun” started. I was holding both of his hands at that point and we were sitting as always across from each other. Suddenly, his eyes narrowed and flashed as we hit “anger”. He began to arc both his hands from bottom top in the fashio of two half-moons.

He also started to rise in his seat and me, being the weaker physical vessel, followed his actions. Then, as we were standing, the spirit in him caused him to exert his wrist and hand strength and began to bend both my wrists back.

This all happened in what seemed like slow motion, I felt my knees start to buckle as his superior strength began to win the day. A feeling of fear tried to come upon me and I was almost ready to call out to the secretary in the room outside my closed door.

While this was unfolding, I was speaking to “Bill”, peering into his eyes and binding up the spirit that was manifesting in a firm and progressively louder voice! By the grace of God, I was finally able to break through to him and he was able to get himself back and this demon quit manifesting.

After a short break and discussion about what was happening, we were able to discern the open door that was operating for that demon to stay and resist. The door was closed, the demon called out and the session continued and finished well. We have seen many manifestations of demons as they are being called out but this was a particularly memorable occasion!

“No fear” is a maxim that believers, and especially those who minister in deliverance, need to be embrace. It was a teaching moment for me and helped me to be properly respectful of the great power that demons can wield in our body and soul. The church is called to minister in deliverance but needs to be aware, trained and prepared for events such as this.

Have you seen demons manifest like this people?
