This is the second in a series of articles on generational curses common to women of different ethnic backgrounds. Below are my observations and experiences in deliverance ministry with what I have found to be common in the African American culture, whose generational roots are founded in slavery.
God began identifying specific generational curses to me during my very first group deliverance prayer seminar. I had been training and shadowing other prayer warriors for quite some time, but on this day I was released for the first time to call out any spirits of slumber for an African American woman. As I sat before her and bound the strongman of slumber and began to call out any spirit of sleepiness, she let out a tribal sounding scream and fell sound asleep.
Perplexed, I called her back to consciousness by her name and she woke right up. As I took authority in the name and blood of Jesus, spirits of sleepiness, lethargy, and sluggishness left her. This woman owned her own business and was a high level intercessor for one of the big ministries in Florida, but she was wearied by the amount of energy it took her to get things done.
It was apparent to me that this was a generational curse of slumber when her sister came in two years later and as we prayed for her, the same thing happened. When we called out that spirit of sleepiness she headed south on the couch and almost fell asleep. Since then I have noticed many of my clients with true African roots have a difficult time staying awake in my office. Recently one of my clients asked for a straight chair, rather sitting on our comfy couch because she would nod off.
As I studied some of the atrocities of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse that the slaves endured, I realized that the only time they got peace was during their times of sleep. It appeared that they sang in and prayed in spirits of slumber so they could escape the abuse. Similar to clients with depression, these spirits of slumber were invited in.
Generational curses of Abuse frequently manifest with spirits of fear of trauma, fear of abuse, fear of authority, and hiding. Curses of perversion follow with repeated evidence of rape, molestation and incest, common amongst slaves and still repeating today.Common curses of separation and abandonment stem from the original uprooting and separating of the slaves from their land and families. What has resulted spiritually from these curses is found in high rates of divorce due to spirits of division, separation and strife.
With little exception you will always see a curse of theft on this bloodline. Specifically, there is a curse of theft of inheritance, birthright, and land that manifests today with spirits of poverty. What was intended for this group the enemy has come to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10). But we know the rest of that scripture! Jesus came to give Life, and life to the fullest.
I will tell you that my most rewarding deliverances are found in the openness of these women who are so willing to share their history with me and then allow the name and blood sacrifice of Jesus Christ to set them free from the bondage spirits of Slavery to their past! One client, who came in slumped over, literally danced her way out of my office to the door singing a victory song.
Once these generational curses have been identified and exposed, it is not difficult to cast out the spirits that lie behind them. God made a way through his son for us to set the captives free. We have a gentle and safe process of deliverance that can bring you into the fullness of the promise that God has waiting for you! I look forward to hearing from you on this topic. Does it add any clarity to what you are walking though?
