Stop Saying That You Are A Sinner!

In our counseling and deliverance sessions, apart from the preparatory teachings and ministry time, we put a lot of effort into familiarizing our clients with the power of the tongue. In the tongue, the bible tells us in Proverbs 18:21, is the power of life and death and we will eat of its fruit so this topic bears special emphasis for us.

We need to see ourselves as God sees us and as the Word speaks about us. We know that many people are operating under word curses spoken over them by others or by themselves. These curses have the most effect when they are spoken by people close to us and who are supposed to be our protectors and coverings—like parents, siblings, bosses, pastors and the like. These are powerful forces in a person’s life and the open door for curses to be operating, for spirits to enter in, is typically by believing and standing in agreement with the curses spoken.

As significant as these are, another common source of torment is what each person speaks over themselves. Common self-imposed curses might include, “I’m so stupid”, “I’ll always be poor”, “I always catch whatever is going around”, “Nobody will ever want me” and so on. You get the picture.

I am convinced that one of the most damaging is the contention, coming from a professed believer, is that “I’m just a sinner, saved by grace”. It’s invariably used in the context of trying to explain or understand why they are continuing in their sin. When I hear that, I stop the person in their tracks and try to help them renew their mind, and ultimately what they speak, in this area.

That declaration is not true if one is truly born again. Part of it is accurate in that we are indeed saved by grace, through faith, as Paul explains in Ephesians 2:8. If we accept the promise that words have spiritual power to bring what is spoken into being (consider Christ’s admonition in Mark 11:23 and elsewhere), then we must be careful of what we speak over ourselves and others.

The spiritual reality is that when we cross over from death to life (John 5:24), then we become a child of God and are no longer sinners. We must declare that spiritual truth, and others, so that the Holy Spirit can be activated to perform works in our lives. We will continue to struggle with sin, but we are now children and lovers of God and no longer sinners! Continuing to speak that word will limit the renewing of our mind and the transformation that the Lord wants to work in us.

When we see ourselves properly as a child of God, as an ambassador of the heavenly realm and, aligning ourselves with all of his Word, begin to speak and declare that out then we can in greater measure walk in that victory and all of God’s provision for us.
