Henry David Thoreau determined famously that, “Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.” That is such a mournful declaration in general but is even more painful if it is applied, and is true, for those who profess Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
Is it possible for someone to be “saved” and a true disciple and follower of Jesus yet still be living a life that is far less than their Savior intends? The answer of course is “yes”! What does a life of quiet desperation look like? Just a few of the symptoms might be chronic or enduring:
- luke-warmness
- dependence upon psychotropic drugs
- hidden sin where victory is elusive
- religious living but little victory or power, and more!
There can be many reasons for such conditions but for many, especially for those who have actively sought help in the Church, the problem is that they do not recognize the true source of their problem: the demonic realm!
Christians are engaged in a spiritual battle, not a fleshly one (Ephesians xxx) and the weapons of our warfare need to be spiritual and not fleshly. The demonic realm tries to get people off track with all sorts of proven devices, including the lure of “gold, gals (or guys) or glory”. When any one of these, or other lures, fails to satisfy, or if we see our purposes repeatedly stymied, then it is easy to settle into a “this is as good as it’s going to get” ruts. Many people it seems never escape this routine and this settle for much less abundance and blessings than are available! Jesus came to set us free from “issues”, not teach us how to cope!
One of the major keys to gaining victory is to recognize the problem. Half-diagnosed is half-cured as a friend of mine opines. There are not demons behind every problem and obstacle in our life but most Christians are woefully ignorant of those issues that DO have a demonic basis. Issues such as chronic, enduring addiction, depression, anger, fear, addictions, perversions and more. Note the emphasis on chronic and enduring. If we come to the Lord and walk with Him and cannot get the victory in some of these areas then we need to be open to the idea that demonic torment may be at the root.
The ONLY cure for demonic torment is deliverance from the tormenting spirit(s). After that, the battlefield is the soulish realm: specifically the mind and also the memory and emotions , as we deal with the demonic onslaught in this area as the demons seek to return to the house. We must discern and resist the devils as we walk with, and submit to, the Lord!
If your life is stuck in neutral or, even worse, rolling backwards then do yourself a huge favor and go through deliverance in a competent church or ministry. You have a song in you that God wants sung! It won’t hurt you and hopefully will help because Jesus does want you free and walking in power and passion!
